Alismataceae - Water-plantain Family

Arrowhead

Sagittaria cuneata, S. latifolia

The tubers are an excellent starch source. They are found at the end of the rhizomes perhaps 1 meter or more from the parent plant. Best collected by wading barefoot and digging them up with ones toes. Roast or boil for 15 to 30 minutes in salted water. The stems and seeds contain an alkaloid and may be poisonous.
